# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Portswood: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Keep the motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Portswood, catching it before your motor turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Portswood and Westwood Park carry another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## Portswood: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Grosvenor Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Mitre.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Portswood or out in St Denys.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Portswood forecourt or a drive over in Bevois Valley, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — at St Denys's car park, say — not when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Richmond Gardens.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Portswood?

Brief list, then. First: your engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or anywhere else.

Your own drive in Portswood is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Portswood lies under 3 miles from the M27; there, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Southampton, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Portswood.

## When we turn up in Portswood, what occurs?

By St Denys Primary School, near Portswood Library or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

We ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, since those answers decide this work and our quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of dispatch.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
