# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Prestbury: Why It Occurs

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Prestbury.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels near Prestbury and Cleevemount carry, with diesel for your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Prestbury?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Ann Goodrich Close before work, or in the car park outside The King's Arms on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it occurs in Noverton or the middle of Prestbury, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt around Prestbury or a drive out in Pittville. Seconds, no more.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cheltenham Spa.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across Gloucestershire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of High Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays out.

## Prestbury: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Bouncers Lane Service Station, Sainsbury's or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car clear if asked.

Your own driveway in Prestbury is where it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Prestbury lies under 5 miles from the M5; on it, take the next junction.

A short hop across Prestbury is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians arrive around Prestbury, what happens?

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Prestbury United Reformed Church, or by St Mary's Church of England Infant School.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide both work and quote.

On the call itself, you are told the price — ahead of anything else.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we go.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once we are there.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## Prestbury and Gloucestershire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a rural village, Prestbury has the same vans as surrounding places — Lynworth, Oakley — right across GL postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Fastest of all: quote a GL52 3 postcode for the van.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

Draining takes place right there, be it a driveway, a road near St Mary's Church, or a layby towards Prestbury Playing Fields.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Prestbury Women's Institute Hall.

## In short, for Prestbury drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Gloucestershire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off then call 0333 366 0103.
