# Primrose Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when your motor hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits around Primrose Hill.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Maitland Park, like those in Primrose Hill, run on two liquids; your engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at every filling station visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Primrose Hill: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Fitzroy Road, or outside The Princess of Wales on the way home after work.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Chalk Farm or bang in the heart of Primrose Hill.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Primrose Hill forecourt or a drive out in Regents Park, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Kentish Town West's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Greater London — a simple routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Chalcot Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Step five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Primrose Hill?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Esso or another — the staff will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

At home in Primrose Hill? Then the car remains put.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Primrose Hill, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Primrose Hill is less work than a trip of under 5 miles to Westminster, so tell us.

## Primrose Hill: what occurs when our engineers get there

The van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Beside The Wave, or outside Primrose Hill School.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

No one sets off until you've had our price over the phone.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

The car stays put.

Anywhere it sits — near W. B. Yeats, on a layby en route to Chalcot Square Gardens, on a drive — that is where it is cleared.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Sylvia Plath, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## The short version for Primrose Hill drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Greater London, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
