# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Primrose: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

In Primrose, catching it before your engine runs normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Primrose and Bowerham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Primrose: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Bowerham Road before work, or in the car park at The Park on the way home.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it.

Whether it takes place in Moorlands or the middle of Primrose, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Freehold or a forecourt in Primrose.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Lancaster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Lancashire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Prospect Street.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Primrose?

Do not start the motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at BP, JET or any forecourt will usually help pushing your car away when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Primrose.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next exit is the place to come off when you are on the M6, under a mile from Primrose.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lancaster, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Primrose.

## When our technicians arrive around Primrose, what occurs?

Wherever the car has stopped, whether outside Bowerham Primary & Nursery School, beside 53 Lancaster Scouts or at home, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Once the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we go.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need about half an hour after we arrive.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains across Lancashire, Primrose included

Primrose is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Golgotha and The Greaves among them, across the LA postcode area.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting LA1 3.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Anywhere it sits — beside Harold Bridges Library, in a layby en route to Greaves Park, on a drive — that is where it is cleared.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Cathedral Social Centre.

## Primrose motorists: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
