# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Primrose? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition as well.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens till your motor pulls it through.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Primrose.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Primrose

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't throw it away.

- Call just where you are. Quote a NE32 5 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is pointless.

- Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch down Hylton Road.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The attendants working at any Primrose filling station — the Esso included — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave it exactly where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — entirely different from fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the same spot the intake sucks from.

A motor topped up on a driveway in Brockley Whins yesterday evening and not started since is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

It eats at some metals found in fuel components, working on any part it touches till it's cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle parked around Primrose. Just inside that tank, it stays the same.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Morrisons.

No damage comes as long as it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Crystals and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Campbell Park or the centre of Primrose alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Tyne and Wear your car is standing.

## Primrose: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the filling station.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Valley View Primary School.

After work, a container goes in on a drive near Langley Terrace.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Prince of Wales, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, new motors, company motors, or the spare car in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Wherever you're around Primrose or the remainder of Tyne and Wear, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Primrose, and the motor started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Valley View Playground, say, or part way across Primrose.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the A194(M), under 3 miles from Primrose, at the first junction and park safely, not carrying on.

Hopping across Primrose to the car park by St Peter is one matter; driving towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's caught quickly.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Primrose

Wherever it has stopped in Primrose — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside St Matthew's RC Church — the van comes to the car.

Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly the amount, and if the motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of the car.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, outside Brockley Whins or on a drive around Primrose.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## About Primrose

Primrose is a suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, with a relatively low elevation of 17 metres. Primrose sits near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately 5 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Hedworth, Monkton, and Fellgate. Primrose has a population of around 4907 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing.

## AdBlue drains in Primrose and across Tyne and Wear

Hedworth, Monkton and Fellgate are among the places near Primrose that the same vans serve, along with most of Tyne and Wear beyond, over the NE postcode area.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No towing is needed. In Primrose, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the vehicle is emptied on the spot, whether on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Primrose?

Since each callouts differ, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Monkton Stadium.

For that reason, every call from Primrose begins with the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, if the engine ran — before any figure.

Once they are answered, a range turns into a single fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Primrose: still alongside your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best thing open to you.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Primrose or wherever within Tyne and Wear, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran.
