# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Priors Park? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble starts once it's sucked through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly purged where your car sits around Priors Park.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Priors Park: the first few minutes

Do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not bin it out.

- Ring right where you are. Say a GL20 5 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Never:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine remains off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's pointless.

- Even a short distance along Gloucester Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Emptying the tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

The attendants working at any Priors Park filling station — the Morrisons included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

On that drive, the car stays just as it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

From a separate tank it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from.

A car filled on a drive in Upper Lode overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; and, since it attacks some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

By daybreak, a car parked in Priors Park with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it's only inside the tank, nothing changes.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in your tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether the vehicle sits in Mitton or the centre of Priors Park, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in that tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever the vehicle has stopped in Gloucestershire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Priors Park: how it ends up there

Many vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody intends it.

A bottle bought when driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Queen Margaret Primary Academy the refill is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Conigree Lane.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park outside Gupshill Manor, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet car, or the other car of a home with both fuel types — the cars people use least.

An identical slip, an identical first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Priors Park or the remainder of Gloucestershire.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Priors Park?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Vineyards or halfway across Priors Park.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M5, under 3 miles from Priors Park, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Priors Park to the car park by Battle of Tewkesbury is a very different job from a run towards Gloucester, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

We do all of the flushing where the vehicle has stopped, and once the motor has been run there is more of it.

Caught early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Priors Park: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road near Chapels at Tewkesbury Cemetery, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Priors Park, and the van comes to it.

Which fluid got in, about the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over: our engineers check first, since those decide the work.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

Testing the car follows at the end, once fresh diesel is added and the filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Last, the system is bled with new diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Ashchurch for Tewkesbury or a driveway in Priors Park, that is where our engineers start the engine and you set off.

It's checked on new diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers go.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## Priors Park and Gloucestershire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Priors Park go to vans that serve the towns around it — Tewkesbury, Walton Cardiff plus Lower Lode — and most of Gloucestershire further out, throughout GL postcodes.

Near a boundary, or somewhere awkward to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

A mobile service suits Priors Park, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your car to us, since our engineers empty it there, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Priors Park

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Cholera Monument.

Which fluid went in, what quantity, plus whether the engine ran: each Priors Park call opens with precisely that, before a figure, never after.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Beside the vehicle in Priors Park, still?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Say it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Priors Park or wherever in Gloucestershire.
