# Pye Nest: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the vehicle sits around Pye Nest, is normally what it takes if found before the engine runs.

Here before the event? Then what follows covers why it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of newer diesels driven round Pye Nest and Norland Town hold a second fluid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Pye Nest

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Copley Avenue, perhaps outside The Wainhouse Tavern on the way home after work.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in King Cross or the middle of Pye Nest, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Pickwood Scar or a forecourt in Pye Nest.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook says where it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Sowerby Bridge? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Calder Avenue, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Pye Nest already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Asda, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car away when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Pye Nest.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next exit means the place to come off when you're on the M62, under 5 miles from Pye Nest.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Pye Nest is less work than a run of under 10 miles to Bradford, so tell us.

## Pye Nest: what happens when our technicians arrive

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Warley Road Primary Academy, near Wainhouse Tower or on your own driveway.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers decide the work and quote.

Nobody heads out until you've heard our price by phone.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Moving your car isn't needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Community Support Services, a lay-by on the way to Milner Royd Local Nature Reserve, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of King Cross Library.

## In short, for Pye Nest drivers

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.
