# Queensway: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Queensway, catching it before your engine runs normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels on the roads around Queensway and Alburne Park carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

There's a filler for each tank.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Queensway: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off Queensgate before work, or in the car park at Golden Acorn Hotel heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Queensway or out in Auchmuty.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Queensway forecourt or a drive over in Cadham, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Markinch? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Fife, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Queensway Roundabout, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found the filler and read it.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Queensway?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Morrisons or the Asda, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump.

At home around Queensway? So the vehicle stays put.

Already run? Stop once it's sensible, then turn off.

The next junction means the place to come off if you're on the M90, under 10 miles from Queensway.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Dunfermline, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Queensway.

## Our arrival in Queensway, and what occurs next

The van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Hippos, or outside the local primary school.

Those answers settle the work and the quote, so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## Queensway and Fife: AdBlue drains across the area

Queensway is a residential suburb, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, Glenrothes and Town Centre among them, across the KY postcode area.

Quote a postcode beginning KY7 5, and our van gets there quickest.

Your car stays where it is.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Studio8, a lay-by on the way to Common Green, a drive.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of YMCA? By a county line? Checking beats assuming, so ring.

## In short, for Queensway drivers

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it wherever it is, anywhere across Fife: keep the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
