# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Radcliffe: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Radcliffe, finding it before the engine turns usually means draining and a full flush on the spot.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds your engine — yet plenty of modern diesels seen about Radcliffe and Outwood carry a second liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on every tank.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Radcliffe: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a drive off Blackburn Street before work, or in the car park at The Lord Raglan on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, keeps on.

Black Lane or the heart of Radcliffe: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Radcliffe forecourt or a driveway over in Lily Hill, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Kearsley? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever around Greater Manchester, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Pilkington Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Radcliffe already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Keep the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Asda or the Asda Pay Desk, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Radcliffe.

Already started? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

Radcliffe lies under 3 miles from the M60; on it, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Salford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Radcliffe.

## What happens when our engineers turn up in Radcliffe

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Gorsefield Primary School, near St Thomas & St John or on your own drive.

The answers settle the work and the price, so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run.

The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
