# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Radmanthwaite

Keep the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where the car sits in Radmanthwaite, is usually all it needs when found before the engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your engine — but plenty of current diesels seen around Radmanthwaite and Pleasley carry a second fluid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The error lives in that gap.

## Radmanthwaite: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Radmanthwaite Road before work, or in the car park outside The Bull Farm on the way home.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Radmanthwaite or out in Bull Farm.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Radmanthwaite forecourt or a drive over in Pleasley Vale, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or company car — at Mansfield Woodhouse's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Nottinghamshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Cator Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Radmanthwaite?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the Texaco or anywhere else.

If you are on your own driveway around Radmanthwaite, leave the car where it is.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the car off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Radmanthwaite, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Radmanthwaite is a smaller job than a run towards Nottingham, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Radmanthwaite, what occurs?

The van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Stacey Road Comunity Centre, or outside Farmilo Primary School and Nursery.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the answers settle the work and our price.

That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and confirm that it's running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run take roughly half an hour once we arrive.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Give a postcode beginning NG19 7, and the van gets there quickest.

The vehicle stays where it is.

Wherever it stands — beside Mansfield Town FC - RH Academy, on a layby en route to Bull Farm Park, on a drive — that's where it is drained.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Barnabas, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## Radmanthwaite motorists: the short version

Pour nothing until you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Nottinghamshire.
