# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rainham

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just starts when your pump begins pulling it.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Rainham.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Rainham: the first few minutes

Do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents someone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Call right where you are. Quote a RM13 9 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Moving your car even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it's pointless.

- Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch down Bridge Road.

- Emptying the tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll your car away from the pumps if you're at a forecourt around Rainham, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its supply from.

A vehicle filled on a drive in Coldharbour yesterday evening and not started since is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

If the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning around Rainham makes things worse. Inside that tank only, time does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

Blended through the diesel and left still, it is harmless at that stage; running your motor is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Whether your vehicle is in Hacton or the centre of Rainham, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Greater London the vehicle has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Rainham: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

It usually occurs at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

The top-up is hurried outside Rainham Village Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken in.

After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Upminster Road South.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Phoenix, and someone using that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Rainham or the rest of Greater London.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rainham?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Via the filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Perhaps returning from Brookway Open Space, or midway across Rainham, your engine might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or stall.

When safe, stop then switch it off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M25, under 5 miles from Rainham, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Rainham to the car park by Rainham Clocktower is a very different job from a run towards London, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

When it is spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Rainham?

Anywhere it has come to rest in Rainham — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a street beside St. Helen & St. Giles — the van comes to the vehicle.

Three replies shape the job, so first our engineers ask which fluid was put in, about the amount, plus whether the motor has run.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we turn up, provided your engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Whether it's a parking space at Rainham (Essex) or a drive around Rainham, that is where we start it and you head off.

It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians head off.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Rainham, briefly

Rainham is a locality in east London, situated on the north bank of the River Thames at a low elevation of around 5 metres. Rainham lies within the Greater London area, approximately 13.7 miles from central London, and is near the communities of South Hornchurch, Wennington, and Dagenham. Rainham is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock, reflecting its urban setting.

## AdBlue drains in Rainham and across Greater London

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls around Rainham also cover the places round it, South Hornchurch, Wennington and Dagenham among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the RM postcode area.

Assuming doesn't help by a county line or somewhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

Rainham is a small village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Rainham

Each job differs, so not one single quote would be fair.

What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Royals.

With that in mind, every call from Rainham begins by asking the same trio — what got in, how much, whether the engine ran — before any quote.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Rainham: still beside your car?

Then, touch nothing — that's the most helpful step available.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Rainham or anywhere across Greater London.
