# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rainsough? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition as well.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Rainsough, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Rainsough: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Call right where you are. Say a M25 9 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your engine stays off.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't thin it.

- Even a short distance down Roman Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Draining that tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

The attendants working at any Rainsough forecourt — the Shell among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Prestwich Bank last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight around Rainsough makes it worse. In your tank only, time costs nothing.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco.

No damage comes as long as it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Sedgley Park or the heart of Rainsough equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Greater Manchester your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Rainsough?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts allow it.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Butterstile Primary School the top-up is hurried.

Someone tips the container in at home, right off Kersal Road, as the day ends.

Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park by Friendship Inn, and someone using that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a fleet car, or the other motor in a family with both fuels — the cars drivers know least.

Wherever you are around Rainsough or the rest of Greater Manchester, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Rainsough: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

It has been sucked through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Prestwich Golf Course or halfway across Rainsough.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M60, under 3 miles from Rainsough, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Rainsough to park near St Andrew and a drive of under 3 miles for Salford are such distinct jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it is spotted early.

## Rainsough: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Rainsough: a side street near Moor Lane, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, and so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, about what quantity, plus if the engine has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after the tank is drained, on the spot.

A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear out by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The last step is to prime your system on clean diesel.

At that point our engineers start it and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Clifton or a driveway in Rainsough.

It is tested on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before our technicians leave.

As the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Rainsough and where it is

Rainsough is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Irwell and close to the city of Salford. Rainsough has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and the area is relatively low-lying at an elevation of 67 metres. Rainsough is located near several other suburban areas, including Kersal and Lower Kersal, and is about 2.5 miles from Salford. Rainsough has a population of around 5406 people, according to recent estimates.

## Rainsough and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Rainsough are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — Kersal, Hilton Park plus Lower Kersal — and most of Greater Manchester beyond, across M postcodes.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No towing is needed. In Rainsough, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, be it in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Rainsough

Each job differs, so not one single quote would be honest.

What shifts the price is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Salford Sports Village.

For that in mind, each call from Rainsough begins with the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether it ran — ahead of any figure.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

As our engineer is on the way, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## In Rainsough and still beside the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Rainsough or anywhere across Greater Manchester.
