# Rake Common: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where your car stands in Rake Common, is normally what it needs when found before your motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Rake Common and Princes Marsh carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station visit, again and again.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Rake Common: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Hill Brow Road, perhaps outside The Jolly Drover on the way home after work.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Hill Brow or the heart of Rake Common: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in East Liss or a forecourt around Rake Common, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Liss.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in Hampshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Malvern Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read it.

- The two behind a single flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Rake Common?

Brief list, then. First: your engine stays unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the Texaco or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Rake Common.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the Waterlooville Bypass, under 10 miles from Rake Common, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Rake Common is less work than a run of under 15 miles to Chichester, so tell us.

## When our engineers arrive in Rake Common, what takes place?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Liss Junior School, near St Paul's United Reformed Church or on your own drive.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that washes away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

After that we start the engine and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
