# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ravenhill

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts when your pump starts drawing it.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully cleaned where the vehicle stands around Ravenhill.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Ravenhill: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, take your keys out.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so don't throw it out.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WS15 1, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: your motor remains off.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is wasted.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Myatt Way.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Ravenhill forecourt you're on, the Esso included.

At home, your car stays exactly as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, treating what your motor emits.

Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Slitting Mill overnight and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out.

A car left sitting in Ravenhill with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the main issue.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Ravenhill or out in Brereton Cross, costs more than nearly any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Staffordshire the vehicle is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Ravenhill?

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody intends it.

It usually happens at home, from a container bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Redbrook Hayes Community Primary School.

Near Heath Road, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Another version: dim light, the car park by The Miners Arms, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuels — the cars people know the least.

An identical slip, an identical first step — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Ravenhill or the remainder of Staffordshire.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ravenhill?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Through the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, maybe midway across Ravenhill or returning from Ravenhill Park.

No starting it again to check: pull over when it is safe, then switch everything off.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the M6 Toll, under 10 miles from Ravenhill, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system. That is why a hop across Ravenhill to park beside Brereton & Ravenhill Parish Hall and a drive of under 10 miles towards Lichfield are such separate jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is caught quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Ravenhill: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped around Ravenhill — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Brereton Methodist Church — the van travels to your vehicle.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run, since those answers decide this work.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because what remains won't flush out unaided.

A test of your car follows last, once fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where needed, swapped.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Last, the system is bled with fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Rugeley Town or a drive in Ravenhill, that is where our engineers start the engine and you drive off.

It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs properly before we head off.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## AdBlue drains in Ravenhill and across Staffordshire

AdBlue call-outs in Ravenhill are passed to vans that cover the towns around it — Brereton, Rugeley as well as Breretonhill — and most of Staffordshire further out, throughout WS postcodes.

Guessing doesn't help by a border or anywhere hard to describe; phone and check.

A van that comes to you fits Ravenhill, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your vehicle to us, since our engineers drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Ravenhill?

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Michael.

For that reason, each enquiry from Ravenhill begins by asking the identical trio — what went in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of any figure.

With them, the range shrinks to one fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## Next to the car in Ravenhill, still?

Right now, the best thing to do with your car is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, in Ravenhill or anywhere in Staffordshire, after you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran.
