# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ravenscraig? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine pulls it through.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Ravenscraig.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ravenscraig: the first few minutes

To do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Which product, and about what volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will see.

- Tell us a postcode starting PA16 0, or whatever street is closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Moving the vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Burns Road.

- By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Moving the car off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Ravenscraig forecourt you're on, the BP included.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of mixing — quite different from fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Fancy Farm yesterday and not switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as nobody turns the key.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; and, because it attacks certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

A vehicle left sitting in Ravenscraig with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a separate kind of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the main fault.

No damage comes while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only when the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Ravenscraig or out in Smithston, costs more than almost any other error.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Inverclyde the vehicle is sitting.

## Ravenscraig: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

It mostly takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Ravenscraig Gardens, as the day ends.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside The Burns Lounge, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company vehicle, or the spare car of a home with both fuels — the vehicles people use least.

Wherever you're in Ravenscraig or the remainder of Inverclyde, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ravenscraig?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Coves Community Park Local Nature Reserve, perhaps, or part way across Ravenscraig.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M8, under 10 miles from Ravenscraig, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why a hop across Ravenscraig to park beside Ravenscraig Stadium and a drive of under 25 miles for Glasgow are such distinct jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Caught soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## Ravenscraig: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around Ravenscraig — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a street beside St. Andrew's Parish Church — the van comes to your car.

The work depends on three answers, and our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains won't wash away by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the system is primed with clean diesel.

After that our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Branchton or a driveway around Ravenscraig.

Before leaving, our engineers make sure it's running correctly with new diesel in.

Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## About Ravenscraig, briefly

Ravenscraig is a coastal suburban area in Inverclyde, situated near the towns of Spango, Braeside, and Branchton. Ravenscraig has a relatively low elevation of 51 metres and is located approximately 22 miles west of Glasgow. Ravenscraig is characterized by its predominance of terraced housing, which reflects the area's history of residential development. Ravenscraig is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of around 361 miles.

## AdBlue drains around Ravenscraig and across Inverclyde

Over the PA postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue jobs in Ravenscraig reach much of Inverclyde too, Spango, Braeside and Branchton included.

Ring and check rather than guess when you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Ravenscraig is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Ravenscraig?

Because the callouts differ, a single price would not be honest.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Larkfield Community Hall.

Before a figure, not afterwards, every enquiry from Ravenscraig opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether the engine ran.

Their replies shrink a range right down to one figure.

Before a van sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Still alongside the car around Ravenscraig?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Ravenscraig or wherever in Inverclyde, once you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran.
