# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ravensthorpe

Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where the vehicle sits around Ravensthorpe, is normally what it needs if found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of current diesels on the roads around Ravensthorpe and New England carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Ravensthorpe

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Raleigh Way before work, or in the car park outside The Oxcart on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Ravensthorpe or out in Bretton.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, at a forecourt around Ravensthorpe or a drive out in Millfield. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — from Peterborough's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are around Cambridgeshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Soke Parkway, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel side stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ravensthorpe?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Ravensthorpe, leave the car where it sits.

Where the engine has run by now, pull over safely and turn the car off.

Ravensthorpe lies under 5 miles from the A1(M); on it, use the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Ravensthorpe is smaller work than a run of under 3 miles to Peterborough, and so say.

## Ravensthorpe: what occurs when our engineers arrive

Wherever the car has stopped, be it outside Highlees Primary School, near Church of the Holy Spirit or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

What liquid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because those answers decide the work and price.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the car.

Before we go, we start it and make sure that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## The short version for Ravensthorpe drivers

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Cambridgeshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
