# Rawthorpe: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits in Rawthorpe, is normally all it needs if found before the engine runs.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers how it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads round Rawthorpe and Moldgreen carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Rawthorpe?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Rawthorpe Terrace before work, or in the car park at The Dalton heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

It takes seconds, be it out in Grove Place or bang in the heart of Rawthorpe.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Greenside or a forecourt in Rawthorpe.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Deighton.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere in West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Heys View at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Rawthorpe: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels it by itself runs the pump.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Tesco or any other — the staff will usually help push the car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Rawthorpe.

When the engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

Come off the M62 — under 3 miles out of Rawthorpe — at the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Rawthorpe is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Bradford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Rawthorpe

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Netherhall St James CofE (VC) Infant and Nursery School, near St James' Church & Parish Centre or on your own driveway.

The answers decide the work and our price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

Nobody sets off until you've heard the price over the phone.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Rawthorpe and where it is

Rawthorpe is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the River Calder at an elevation of 99 metres. Rawthorpe lies approximately 9 miles east of Bradford and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Rawthorpe is close to nearby places such as Grove Place, Bradley Mills, and Dalton, and is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bradford.

## Rawthorpe and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Rawthorpe is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Bradley Mills and Dalton among them, across the HD postcode area.

Quote a postcode beginning HD5 9, and our van gets there fastest.

There's no need to move the car.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Rawthorpe and Dalton Library, Information and Children's Centre, a lay-by on the way to Canalside Sports Complex, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of The Orchid Centre? By a border? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

## Rawthorpe drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Keep it switched off then call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across West Yorkshire.
