# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Reading

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Reading, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Reading: the first few minutes

Do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting RG1 2, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the motor stays off.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Bridge Street.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Reading forecourt you're on, the BP included.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a dedicated tank it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very place the intake draws from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in The Mount yesterday and never switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody turns your key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches until it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow channels.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Reading with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just in that tank, nothing changes.

Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No harm comes as long as it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in New Town or the middle of Reading.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere in Berkshire the vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Reading?

It's not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

A bottle bought when heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Katesgrove Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

Close to St Mary's Butts, someone tips a bottle in at home after work.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park by The Horn, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet vehicle, or the other vehicle in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people know least.

Anywhere in Berkshire, Reading included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Reading, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Via the filter, along the lines, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Holy Brook Nook or halfway across Reading.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M4, under 3 miles from Reading, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, and so driving for Oxford, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Reading to the car park by Jubilee Fountain.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the motor has been started.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it is spotted soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Reading?

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Reading: a side street near Market Tree Mural, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The job rests on three answers, and our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

Then the tank is emptied where your car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

Not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, your system is primed with clean diesel.

After that our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space at the nearest station or a driveway in Reading.

The test before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Reading

Reading is a significant urban centre situated in the English county of Berkshire, where it serves as the county town. Located in the Thames Valley, the town enjoys a scenic riverside setting where the Thames and Kennet rivers meet. As the largest town in Berkshire, Reading is a notable settlement with a rich character. It is nestled in a picturesque area, making it a distinctive part of the region.

## AdBlue drains around Reading and across Berkshire

The vans that answer AdBlue calls in Reading also cover the spots round it, Coley, Lower Caversham and Caversham among them, and most of Berkshire beyond, across the RG postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Anywhere the car stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Reading, a riverside town, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Reading

Every job differs, so no fixed price is honest.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind St Mary's Church, Castle Street.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Reading begins by asking the identical trio — what got in, what quantity, whether it ran — ahead of any quote.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Still beside the vehicle in Reading?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful thing you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Reading or wherever in Berkshire.
