# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Red Hall: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Leave your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it is emptied and fully cleaned where your car sits in Red Hall.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that is what many modern diesels near Red Hall and Albert Hill carry, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Red Hall: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Darlington Eastern Transport Corridor before work, or in the car park at Highland Laddie on the way home.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Red Hall or out in Haughton le Skerne.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Red Hall forecourt or a drive over in Firth Moor, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Darlington.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Durham that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Murrayfield Way at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- The two under one flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly using its own spout.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Red Hall: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Asda, ask the staff to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway in Red Hall, leave the car where it stands.

Already started? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off.

Red Hall sits under 5 miles from the A66(M); there, take the next exit.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Red Hall is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Durham — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Red Hall: what occurs when we get there

Outside Red Hall Primary School, near Evolution Martial Arts Academy or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those answers decide this work and our price.

During the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Draining the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Red Hall, and Durham beyond

Red Hall is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Great Burdon and Eastbourne among them, across the DL postcode area.

Fastest of all: quote a DL1 2 postcode to our van.

Moving the car isn't necessary.

The drain happens right there, whether a drive, a street by Boxfit Health Club, or a layby on the way to Lingfield Green.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Haughton Methodist Church? By a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

## The short version for Red Hall drivers
