# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Redhill: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine hasn't run, it's emptied and fully rinsed where the car is around Redhill.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Redhill and Bestwood carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## Redhill: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Mansfield Road before work, or in the car park at The Ram heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

It's seconds, be it in Red Hill or bang in the heart of Redhill.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Top Valley or a forecourt in Redhill.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Bulwell? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever around Nottinghamshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Harberton Close at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Redhill already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Asda, Esso or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Redhill, leave it where it is.

Already run? Stop when it's safe, then switch off.

The next exit is the place to come off if you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Redhill.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Redhill makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles towards Nottingham — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers arrive in Redhill, what occurs?

The van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside 1st Redhill Scout & Guide Group, or by Arnold Mill Primary and Nursery School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — which fluid, which quantity, and if it's run — so we ask.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

The engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## About Redhill

Redhill is a suburban area in Nottinghamshire, situated approximately 3.9 miles north of Nottingham city centre. Redhill sits at an elevation of around 83 metres, in a gently sloping landscape characteristic of the East Midlands region. Redhill is predominantly composed of detached housing, reflecting the area's residential character. Redhill is also located near other local places, including Red Hill, Arnold, and Daybrook.

## AdBlue drains about Redhill, and Nottinghamshire beyond

Arnold and Daybrook are among the towns around Redhill, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over NG postcodes.

Fastest of all: quote a NG5 8 postcode to our van.

Moving the car isn't needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Redhill Leisure Centre, a lay-by on the way to Church Lane Recreation Ground, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of St Mary's Arnold? By a border? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

## In short, for Redhill drivers

Read the cap before you tip.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep the car switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, throughout Nottinghamshire.
