# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Redvales

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits in Redvales.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Redvales: the first few minutes

Do:

- Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it out.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BL9 9, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Shifting the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance along Wilpshire Close is too far to drive the car.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

The attendants working at any Redvales filling station — the BP among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very place the pickup sucks from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Barlow Fold last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it's sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out.

Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning in Redvales makes things worse. In that tank alone, waiting does nothing.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole fault.

No harm comes as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Bury or the heart of Redvales, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere around Greater Manchester your vehicle sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Redvales: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Hurrying, outside St Peter's Church of England Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the car.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Rydal Close.

Else, in dim light by The White Boar, your car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels.

Wherever you're in Redvales or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Redvales?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

The filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe returning from Redvales Playing Fields, or midway across Redvales, your motor might go lumpy, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M66, under 3 miles from Redvales, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Salford, under 10 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Redvales to the car park by Bury Sports Club.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the motor has been started, and our technicians do all of it where your car has ended up.

Long-term damage is very uncommon if it's noticed quickly.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Redvales

A street beside Warth Mills Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the car has come to rest around Redvales, our technicians travel to it.

The job depends on three answers, which we ask for before all else — what was put in, the amount, and whether the engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Testing the car follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Redvales or in a space outside Kearsley.

It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we go.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Greater Manchester, Redvales included

AdBlue call-outs in Redvales go to teams that serve the places around it — Fishpool, Fletcher Fold plus Buckley Wells — and most of Greater Manchester further out, throughout BL postcodes.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Wherever your vehicle sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Redvales, a residential suburb, well.

## Redvales: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same.

Three things move the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Gigg Lane.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Redvales enquiry begins with precisely those, before a quote, never afterwards.

With those replies, a range narrows to one firm figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Redvales: still next to the car?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Redvales or anywhere around Greater Manchester.
