# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Redwood: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Keep your engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, if the engine hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle is around Redwood.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Redwood and Kitt Green carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Redwood?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Redwood Avenue, or on the way home in the car park at Fishergate Inn.

New-to-you motors come next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Lamberhead Green or right in the centre of Redwood.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, at a forecourt around Redwood or a driveway out in Orrell. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Pemberton's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever around Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and not in a rush by Lansbury Street at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly through its built-in spout.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Redwood: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the Asda or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Redwood.

Already run? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

Leave the Orrell Interchange — under a mile out of Redwood — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Redwood is smaller a job than a trip of under 15 miles towards Liverpool, and so tell us.

## When our technicians get there around Redwood, what occurs?

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Saint John the Divine, or outside St John's CofE Primary School.

What fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set the work and quote.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

After the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the car is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians start the car and make sure that it is running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Redwood and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

Redwood is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places around it, Pemberton and The Bell among them, across the WN postcode area.

A postcode starting WN5 8 gets the van to you fastest.

There's no need to move your car.

Draining takes place right there, be it a driveway, a street near Mount Zion Independant Methodist Church, or a layby towards Pemberton Memorial Garden.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Francis of Assisi.

## In short, for Redwood people

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Greater Manchester, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
