# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rewe

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car is around Rewe.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Rewe and Huxham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Rewe

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off A396, or outside the pub in the village on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Rewe or out in Columbjohn.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Stoke Canon or a forecourt in Rewe, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many cars show what belongs in each filler right there.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Pinhoe? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever it is across Devon — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Crosspark.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently using its own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Rewe?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Murco, the Sainsbury's or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Rewe.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off.

Rewe lies under 3 miles from the M5; on it, take the next exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Rewe makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Exeter — so say about how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in Rewe, what takes place?

Our van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Rewe War Memorial, or by Stoke Canon Church of England Primary School and Pre-School.

The answers decide the work and our quote, so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

Nobody heads out until you have had our quote by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Next we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## About Rewe and where it is

Rewe is a small village in Devon, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 36 metres. Rewe lies close to the city of Exeter, approximately 4.8 miles away, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Columbjohn and Netherexe. Rewe has a population of around 551 people and predominantly consists of detached housing.

## AdBlue drains round Rewe, and Devon beyond

Rewe is a village, and the teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Netherexe and Brookleigh among them, across the EX postcode area.

A postcode starting EX5 4 gets the van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Saint Mary the Virgin, a lay-by on the way to Folly Park, a driveway.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Stone cross? By a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

## For Rewe drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere around Devon.
