# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rhydlafr

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the engine off and leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes once your pump begins drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Rhydlafr, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has run.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Rhydlafr: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it away.

- Call right where you are. Say a CF5 6 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Don't do these:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance down Church Road.

- Draining your tank yourself beside the road is not one to try.

On a forecourt around Rhydlafr, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump.

On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Morganstown last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it is flushed out.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight in Rhydlafr leaves things worse. Inside the tank only, time costs nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water part damages them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and this issue is thinned fuel.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Forest Farm or the middle of Rhydlafr.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Cardiff the vehicle is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Rhydlafr

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one means it.

A bottle picked up when driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

The top-up is rushed outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were dropped in.

Close to Ffordd Gwern, a driver tips a bottle in on the drive in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark outside the pub in the village, your car gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types.

Leave it off: that is the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere around Rhydlafr or the rest of Cardiff you are.

## Rhydlafr: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

It's been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might appear, maybe part way across Rhydlafr or returning from Gwern y Cegyrn.

Once you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — with no restarting to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Rhydlafr lies under a mile from the M4; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Hopping across Rhydlafr to the car park by Radyr Golf Club House is one matter; heading for Cardiff, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Permanent damage is very rare when it is noticed quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Rhydlafr: what it takes

Wherever it has come to rest around Rhydlafr — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Radyr Hub — our van comes to your car.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, because those answers settle the work.

Then your tank is emptied where the car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't clear away by itself.

Clean diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, if the motor hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the system on fresh diesel.

After that our technicians start the engine and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Radyr or a drive in Rhydlafr.

The check before our technicians head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Rhydlafr and where it is

Rhydlafr is a small village situated on the banks of a river in Cardiff, with a relatively low elevation of 52 metres. Rhydlafr lies close to the nearby cities and towns, including Cardiff, which is approximately 5 miles away. Rhydlafr has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are the most common. Rhydlafr is part of a wider network of communities, including Capel Llanilltern, Radyr, and Pentyrch.

## Rhydlafr and Cardiff: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Rhydlafr go to teams that cover the towns near it — Capel Llanilltern, Radyr as well as Pentyrch — and most of Cardiff beyond, throughout CF postcodes.

Phone and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Rhydlafr, a village, a mobile service fits: the car is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Rhydlafr?

There is no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Old Church Rooms.

What was put in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: each Rhydlafr call opens by asking exactly those, before a quote, never afterwards.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

The price is given during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Still beside the car in Rhydlafr?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the most helpful step available.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, across Rhydlafr or anywhere in Cardiff, once you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran.
