# Richmond: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens until your motor pulls it round.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car stands around Richmond.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Richmond: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, take the keys away.

- Put your hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a S13 8 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Never do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine stays off.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way along Richmond Road.

- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Richmond forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go that way.

It does not blend. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A car filled on a drive in Handsworth yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when the motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

After it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle parked around Richmond. Just inside that tank, it stays stable.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole fault.

Mixed through the diesel and left still, it's harmless at that stage; using your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether your vehicle sits in Manor Estate or the centre of Richmond, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around South Yorkshire your car has stopped.

## Richmond: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many motors put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one intends it.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Stradbroke Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off Richmond Hall Road, as the day ends.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, stopped in the car park by The Richmond.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuels.

Leave it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Richmond or the rest of South Yorkshire you are.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Richmond?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, maybe midway across Richmond or returning from Woodthorpe Park.

When you safely can, pull over then turn it off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Richmond lies under 3 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so driving towards Sheffield, under 5 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Richmond to the car park by Richmond Church.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Long-term damage is very uncommon if it's caught soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Richmond?

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Richmond: a side street near Stradbroke Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the work, and so first our technicians ask which fluid got in, roughly the amount, plus whether your engine has turned over.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

A test of your car comes last, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, swapped.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Last, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, at Darnall or on a drive around Richmond.

It's tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before our technicians go.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Richmond and South Yorkshire

Woodthorpe Estate, Normanton Spring and Four Lane Ends are among the places around Richmond that the same vans serve, together with much of South Yorkshire beyond, throughout the S postcode area.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you are by a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Wherever your car sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — we drain it there, with no need to take it to us; that suits Richmond, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Richmond?

Each job is different, so not one fixed quote would be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind St Catherine of Siena.

What went in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Richmond enquiry begins by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, not after.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## In Richmond and still alongside the car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful move open to you.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Richmond or wherever within South Yorkshire, once you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran.
