# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Riddings? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave the ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully cleaned where your car sits around Riddings.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Riddings: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Remove the keys, and that stops someone switching the electrics on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting DN17 2, or whichever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Shifting your car just a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Even a short distance along Enderby Road is too far to drive it.

- Do not try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Riddings forecourt — the JET included — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

On the drive, your car stays just as it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very place the intake sucks from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Old Brumby yesterday and not switched on stays the simple case, as long as no one touches your key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Riddings with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it's only in that tank, nothing changes.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Asda's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole fault.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside that tank, it causes nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Whether the vehicle is in Bottesford or the centre of Riddings, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Lincolnshire your car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Riddings

Many motors place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. No one means it.

Usually it's not the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Enderby Road Infant School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Spilsby Road, as the day ends.

One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park by Bottesford Football & Social Club Bar, and someone using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you're around Riddings or the rest of Lincolnshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Riddings?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Via the filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Maybe coming back from Silica Country Park, or part way across Riddings, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or stall.

No starting it again to check: stop once it is safe, then turn everything off.

Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M180, under 3 miles from Riddings, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so driving towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Riddings to the car park by Riddings Leisure Centre.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started.

If it is caught early, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Riddings: what it takes

A street by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has stopped around Riddings, our technicians travel to it.

Three answers shape the work, and so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, about the amount, and if the motor has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol.

A test of your vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter is cleaned or, where needed, replaced.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Whether it's a parking space by Scunthorpe or a driveway around Riddings, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off.

Before leaving, our engineers make sure it is running properly with new diesel in.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## About Riddings

Riddings is a suburban area in northern Lincolnshire, situated near the cities of Kingston upon Hull and Scunthorpe, and close to the villages of Yaddlethorpe and Westcliff. Riddings lies at a low elevation of around 19 metres above sea level, in an area of gently sloping land. Riddings has a population of approximately 5926 people, living in predominantly semi-detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Lincolnshire, Riddings included

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls in Riddings also cover the spots around it, Yaddlethorpe, Westcliff and Ashby among them, and most of Lincolnshire beyond, across the DN postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help by a border or somewhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

Riddings is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Riddings?

No flat figure could be honest, since every job differs.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Church of the Holy Spirit.

That's why every call from Riddings starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

With them, the range narrows to a single fixed number.

Our quote is quoted on the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## In Riddings and still alongside the vehicle?

Then, touch nothing — that is the best step there is.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether the engine ran is everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Lincolnshire, Riddings included.
