# Ridgeway Village: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits in Ridgeway Village.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Coton, as well as Ridgeway Village, carry on two fluids; the motor gets just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Ridgeway Village?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Ayrton Avenue, or on the way home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, whether in Eddington or right in the heart of Ridgeway Village.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Ridgeway Village forecourt or a driveway out in Orchard Park, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Cambridge, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across Cambridgeshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Milne Avenue at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## Ridgeway Village: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone starts your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at BP, Esso or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Ridgeway Village.

Where your motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the car off.

Ridgeway Village sits under a mile from the M11; there, use the next junction.

A short hop across Ridgeway Village is a smaller job than a run towards Cambridge, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Ridgeway Village: what occurs when our technicians turn up

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it by University of Cambridge Primary School, beside Pixel Wall or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies set both work and quote.

No one sets off until you've had our price by phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Before leaving, our engineers start it and check that it is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Fata Morgana Teahouse, a lay-by on the way to Milne Gardens, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Bright Shadows Point.
