# Riley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Riley.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels around Causeway Foot, as well as Riley, carry on two fluids; the engine takes just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Riley

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Riley Lane, or heading home in the car park at The Foxglove.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's a few seconds, whether in Kirkburton or bang in the heart of Riley.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Dogley Lane or a forecourt around Riley.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Stocksmoor.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever across West Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Lee Lane, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Riley?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Gulf, the Star Garage or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Riley is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M62 — under 10 miles out of Riley — at the next exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Riley is a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Wakefield — so say about how far it went.

## Riley: what occurs when our engineers get there

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Kirkburton CofE (VA) First School, near Kirkburton Library or on your own drive.

The answers decide the work and our price, so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

On the call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it sits.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians start the engine and check that it's running properly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
