# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ringmer: Why It Happens

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Ringmer.

Here in advance? Then what follows explains how it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around Ringmer and Broyle Side hold a second fluid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Ringmer?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Vicarage Way before work, or in the car park at The Anchor Inn heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Norlington or the heart of Ringmer: it is the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Ringmer forecourt or a drive out in Ashton Green, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles show which goes in each filler right there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a rental or company car — at Glynde's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across East Sussex that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Farriers Place, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Ringmer: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Busy Bee Garage, Clayhill Service Station or another — the attendants will usually help roll your car clear, when you ask.

Your own drive in Ringmer is the place it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit means where to come off when you are on the M23, under 25 miles from Ringmer.

Distance counts — a short hop across Ringmer makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Brighton and Hove — so say roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up around Ringmer

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Ringmer Primary and Nursery School, close to Ringmer War Memorial or on your own driveway.

Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

During the call itself, you are told the quote — before anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Always, the cap; then, the pour.
