# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ripon: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Ripon, finding it before the motor runs usually leaves draining and a full flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Ripon and Little Studley run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There is a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ripon: how it happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Kirkgate before work, or in the car park at The Unicorn Hotel on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip starts, no part stops it.

Whether it happens in Bondgate or the middle of Ripon, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Camp Close or a forecourt around Ripon, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Thirsk? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around North Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Market Place South, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The two under one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays out.

## Ripon: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive in Ripon, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Already started? Pull over once it is safe, then turn off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you are on the A1(M), under 5 miles from Ripon.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards York, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Ripon.

## When our engineers arrive in Ripon, what happens?

Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside Ripon Cathedral Church of England Primary School, near Cabmen's Shelter or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

What liquid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set both work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

After your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

Then our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly before leaving.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains about Ripon, and North Yorkshire beyond

Ripon is a cathedral city, and the vans that cover it also work the places around it, Borrage Green and Fisher Green among them, across the HG postcode area.

Fastest of all: quote a HG4 1 postcode for the van.

Moving your car isn't needed.

Draining happens on the spot, be it a drive, a street near The Unicorn Hotel, or a lay-by on the way to Temple Gardens.

Assuming doesn't help behind The Town Hall, close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.

## In short, for Ripon people
