# Riseley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Riseley.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Bourne End, like those in Riseley, carry on two fluids; your motor gets just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler to use.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Riseley: how it happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Keysoe Road, or on the way home in the car park at Fox and Hounds.

New-to-you motors come second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Top End or the middle of Riseley, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Riseley or a drive out in Swineshead. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark what goes in each inlet right there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — at Bedford's car park, say — not once the light appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Bedfordshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Barns, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Riseley already?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway around Riseley, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Come off the A1(M) — under 15 miles out of Riseley — at the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Riseley is less work than a trip of under 25 miles to Milton Keynes, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Riseley, and what occurs next

Outside Riseley CofE Primary School, near Church of All Saints or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers decide both work and price.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Before we leave, our engineers start the engine and check that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting MK44 1.

There's no need to shift your car.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Thurleigh Museum, a lay-by on the way to The Mallowry, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Palmer Sport? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

## For Riseley people, the short version

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it stands, wherever around Bedfordshire: keep the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
