# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Riverside

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition too.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump begins pulling it.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Riverside.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Riverside, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Take the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Call just where you are. Say a BA3 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep it off.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short way along Withies Park is too far to drive it.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Riverside forecourt — the Esso included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Hayes Park last night and not started remains the straightforward one, provided no one touches your key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it is cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow passages.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Riverside with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is only inside your tank, nothing changes.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Norton Hill or the middle of Riverside.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Somerset the car is standing.

## Riverside: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one intends it.

It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Longvernal Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Redlands Terrace.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by Crossways Tavern.

The least known vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuels.

Wherever in Somerset, Riverside as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Riverside?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Jack's Wood or halfway across Riverside.

No restarting to check: stop when safe, then switch it off.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Riverside sits under 15 miles from the M32; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Riverside to park near Midsomer Norton and a drive of under 10 miles for Wells are such different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed soon.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Riverside

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a street beside St John the Baptist, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Riverside, and the van comes to it.

The work depends on three replies, and we ask for before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not wash out by itself.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Last, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Oldfield Park or a drive around Riverside, that is where we start it and you head off.

Before we leave, our engineers make sure it is running correctly with new diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Riverside itself

Riverside is a suburban area in Somerset, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 104 metres. Riverside lies near the city of Wells and other nearby places such as Hillside and Midsomer Norton, forming part of the wider South West region. Riverside has a population of approximately 3696 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Riverside and Somerset

Our vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Riverside also cover the locations round it, Hillside, Providence Place and Midsomer Norton among them, and most of Somerset beyond, across the BA postcode area.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

No moving is needed. In Riverside, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: your car is emptied on the spot, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## Riverside: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure would be honest, because every job is different.

What shifts the cost is, first, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Midsomer Norton Children's Centre.

That's why every call from Riverside starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

With them, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Riverside: still alongside your car?

In that case, do nothing — that is the most helpful move available.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, in Riverside or wherever within Somerset, after you call 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
