# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rode Heath: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine hasn't run, it is emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle sits around Rode Heath.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains how it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Rode Heath and Lawton Heath End carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## Rode Heath: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Sandbach Road before work, or in the car park at The Broughton Arms heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Thurlwood or the middle of Rode Heath, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Church Lawton or a forecourt around Rode Heath.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many cars mark what belongs in each filler right there.

- The handbook says where it is when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Alsager's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — wherever it is around Cheshire — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Chapel Lane, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Rode Heath: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Lawton Service Station or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump.

Your own driveway in Rode Heath is where it stays.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means where to leave if you're on the M6, under 3 miles from Rode Heath.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Rode Heath is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles towards Stoke-on-Trent, so tell us.

## What happens when we arrive in Rode Heath

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Rode Heath Primary School, near Church of the Good Shepherd or on your own driveway.

Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next we fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
