# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Rodwell? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens until the motor sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Rodwell, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has been run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Rodwell, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting DT4 9, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Do not:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: your motor remains off.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep it off.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short way along Gypsy Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The staff on duty at any Rodwell forecourt — the Esso among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

At home, the vehicle remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely different from fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A motor filled on a driveway in Melcombe Regis yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when the motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a car sitting in Rodwell with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is only in the tank, it doesn't.

Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the whole problem.

Blended through the diesel and left still, it is no threat for now; running your motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Lanehouse or the centre of Rodwell, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Anywhere around Dorset the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

## Rodwell: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it.

It usually happens at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Hurrying, outside Holy Trinity Church of England VC Primary School & Community Nursery, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive near Ben Nevis Road.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Belvedere Inn, your car is topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere across Dorset, Rodwell as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Rodwell?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Perhaps coming back from The Marsh, or midway across Rodwell, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M5, under 50 miles from Rodwell, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Rodwell to the car park by Weymouth Indoor Bowling Club is a very different job from a run towards Wells, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been run.

Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Rodwell

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a road near Weymouth Old Town Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Rodwell, and our van comes to it.

Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and if the motor has been run, because those replies decide the work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because what remains will not flush away unaided.

A test of the car comes last, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where needed, swapped.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, provided the motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Last, the system is bled with new diesel.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Weymouth or on a drive in Rodwell.

It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers head off.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Rodwell itself

Rodwell is a coastal suburban area in Dorset, situated near the towns of Weymouth and Westham, with Southlands to the east. Rodwell has a population of around 6560 people and is characterised by its predominance of terraced housing. Rodwell sits at an elevation of 38 metres, overlooking the sea, and is located approximately 119 miles southwest of London. Rodwell is also within reach of the nearby city of Wells, which is about 42 miles away.

## Rodwell and Dorset: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the DT postcode area, the teams taking AdBlue jobs around Rodwell reach most of Dorset too, Weymouth, Westham and Southlands among them.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.

Rodwell is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Rodwell: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single figure would be honest, because every job differs.

What changes the price is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Tides Project Centre.

With that reason, each enquiry from Rodwell opens by asking the same trio — what went in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of any figure.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## Rodwell: still alongside the car?

Then, touch nothing — that is the most helpful step there is.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Rodwell or anywhere in Dorset.
