# Rogiet: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle sits around Rogiet.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — yet many newer diesels driven around Rogiet and Caldicot hold a second liquid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Rogiet?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off South Grove, perhaps at the pub in the village on the way home after work.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Llanfihangel near Rogiet or bang in the centre of Rogiet.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Caerwent Brook or a forecourt in Rogiet, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- Can't find it next to your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Severn Tunnel Junction? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever across Monmouthshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Crossway at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Rogiet?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — BP, Gulf or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Rogiet, leave it where it is.

When your motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch it off.

On the M48, under a mile from Rogiet, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Rogiet is a smaller job than a run towards Newport, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up around Rogiet

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Rogiet Community Junction or on your own driveway.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which fluid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is cleared and your system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. That is why it counts more.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of your car.

Before we leave, our technicians start the car and make sure that it is running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run take roughly half an hour after we arrive.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## About Rogiet itself

Rogiet is a small village in Monmouthshire, situated near the coast and approximately 9 miles from Newport. Rogiet has a population of around 1791 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Rogiet sits at a low elevation of 12 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Llanfihangel near Rogiet and Highmoor Hill. Rogiet is also near Brockwells, a local area of interest.

## Rogiet and Monmouthshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a coastal village, Rogiet has the same vans as nearby places — Highmoor Hill, Brockwells — right through NP postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Give a postcode that starts NP26 3, and our van arrives fastest.

Shifting the car isn't necessary.

Wherever it stands — beside Rogiet Hub, in a lay-by en route to Rogiet Recreation Ground, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Dewstow Hidden Garden and Grotto.

## For Rogiet people, the short version

First, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Monmouthshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
