# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Roker: Why It Occurs

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where your car sits around Roker, is normally what it takes when caught before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around Roker and High Southwick carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Roker: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Roker Park Road before work, or in the car park at The Cliff on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, be it in Monkwearmouth or bang in the heart of Roker.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Roker or a driveway over in South Bents. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Seaburn.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Gill Side Grove at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to step five.

## Roker: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the BP, the Morrisons or anywhere else.

On your own drive in Roker? Then your car stays put.

When the motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch it off.

Roker sits under 10 miles from the A194(M); on it, take the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Roker makes a smaller job than driving under 3 miles to Sunderland — so say about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Roker, what takes place?

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Benet's Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School, near Saint Andrew's or on your own driveway.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and quote.

Nobody heads out before you have had the price by phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
