# Rosewarne: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Rosewarne.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels near Rosewarne and Trenerth carry, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Rosewarne: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Wall Road, or at The Pendarves Inn on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Wall or the middle of Rosewarne: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Gwinear or a forecourt in Rosewarne, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors show what belongs in each inlet right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Camborne.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in Cornwall the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Shaft Downs Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the own spout.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Rosewarne?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Texaco or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Rosewarne.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then switch off.

Rosewarne sits over 50 miles from the M5; there, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Truro, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Rosewarne.

## Rosewarne: what occurs when we get there

Wherever the car has stopped, be it outside Gwinear Community Primary School, near St Gwinear or at home, the van travels to it.

What fluid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers set the work and price.

The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

After the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
