# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rotherfield: Why It Occurs

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where your car stands around Rotherfield, is usually what it takes if found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your engine — but many newer diesels driven about Rotherfield and Argos Hill carry another fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Rotherfield?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off High Street, or at Catts Inn on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, whether out in High Cross or right in the centre of Rotherfield.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Rotherfield forecourt or a drive over in Trulls Hatch, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Crowborough? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere around East Sussex, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never rushed by North Street at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure the diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Rotherfield: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or somewhere else.

On your own drive in Rotherfield? So the vehicle remains where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction is where to leave when you're on the M23, under 25 miles from Rotherfield.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Rotherfield.

## Rotherfield: what happens when we get there

Our van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near St Denys' Church, or by Rotherfield Primary School.

Those replies decide the work and our price, so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it sits.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains about Rotherfield, and East Sussex beyond

Throughout TN postcodes, the vans that cover Rotherfield — a rural village — work the nearby spots too, Castle Hill and Town Row among them.

A postcode starting TN6 3 gets the van to you fastest.

Shifting the car is not necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Rotherfield Village Hall, a lay-by on the way to Dewlands Manor Golf Course, a driveway.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Argos Hill Windmill, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## Rotherfield motorists: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in East Sussex, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
