# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rothienorman

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Rothienorman.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels around Badenscoth, like those in Rothienorman, carry on two liquids; your engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

There is a filler on each tank.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what cap to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Rothienorman: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Smithy Road, or heading home in the car park at The Rothie Inn.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Folla Rule or the middle of Rothienorman: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt in Rothienorman or a driveway over in Cross of Jackston. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Insch, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere around Aberdeenshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and not in a rush by Forgue Road on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Rothienorman?

Short list, then. First: your motor remains off.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts your pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Drum of Wartle Garage, another forecourt nearby or another — the staff will usually help roll the car away, if you ask.

If you're on your own drive in Rothienorman, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Leave the M90 — over 50 miles out of Rothienorman — at the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Rothienorman is smaller a job than a run of under 25 miles to Aberdeen, so tell us.

## What takes place when we arrive in Rothienorman

By the local primary school, near Rothienorman Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the replies settle this work and our price.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes away on its own, however long it sits.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
