# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Rothley

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Rothley, catching it before your engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels around Rothley and Thurcaston run, with diesel for the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Rothley

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Fowke Street, perhaps at The Royal Oak on the way home after work.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

Mountsorrel or the middle of Rothley: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Rothley or a drive over in Wanlip. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars show which goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Sileby's car park, say — not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around Leicestershire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Anthony Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Rothley?

Short list, then. Top of that: your motor remains off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Costco, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Rothley, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Rothley, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Rothley is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Leicester — so tell us about how far it went.

## Rothley: what occurs when our engineers get there

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Rothley Church of England Primary School, near Rothley War Memorial or on your own drive.

The replies determine this work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

No one heads out before you have heard our quote over the phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it sits.

Once your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
