# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Royston: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where your car sits around Royston, is normally what it takes when found before your motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many current diesels driven round Royston and Germiston carry another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There is a filler on each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Royston?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Gadshill Street, or outside The Garngad on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Royston or out in Glasgow.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, on a forecourt around Royston or a drive over in Port Dundas. Seconds, no more.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Barnhill's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Glasgow City — a routine to follow.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside Glenbarr Street on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Royston?

Don't start the engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco Petrol Station or the Costco, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

At home around Royston? So the car stays where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Royston sits under a mile from the M8; there, take the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Royston is smaller a job than a run of under a mile towards Glasgow, and so tell us.

## Royston: what happens when our engineers get there

Our van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Royston Library, or outside the local primary school.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the answers determine this work and the quote.

Nobody sets off before you've heard the quote over the phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and finally your car is tested.

After that we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

The car stays put.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Foundry Boys' Church, a lay-by on the way to Garden of Eden, a drive.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of The St Rollox Monument? Close to a border? Checking is better than assuming, and so phone.
