# Rumford: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully rinsed where your car sits in Rumford.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Rumford and Wallacestone run, with diesel feeding the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Rumford

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

On a drive off Wallacelea before work, or in the car park at The Brightons Inn on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Maddiston or the middle of Rumford, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Parkhill or a forecourt around Rumford, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of motors, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Polmont's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are across Falkirk — a routine to follow.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Maddiston Road.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read it.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly using its built-in spout.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rumford?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Esso, Murco or another forecourt will usually help pushing the car clear when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Rumford.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then switch off.

The next junction is the place to come off when you're on the M9, under 3 miles from Rumford.

A short hop across Rumford is a smaller job than a run towards Dunfermline, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when our technicians arrive in Rumford

Wherever the car came to rest, be it by the local primary school, beside Bailliefields or at home, our van comes to it.

Those replies settle the work and the quote, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. That is why it counts more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains around Rumford and across Falkirk

As a village, Rumford shares its vans surrounding areas — Brightons, Crosshall Terrace — all the way across FK postcodes and the wider area beyond.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting FK2 0.

Shifting the car isn't necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Brightons Community Hall, a lay-by on the way to Quarry Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Brightons Parish Church.

## In short, for Rumford people

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere around Falkirk.
