# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Runham

Keep the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Runham.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels in Newtown, as well as Runham, run on two fluids; the motor gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Runham?

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Acle New Road before work, or in the car park at Brewer's Fayre on the way home.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and after the tip begins, no part stops it.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Runham Vauxhall or bang in the heart of Runham.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Runham forecourt or a drive out in North Denes, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Great Yarmouth? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever around Norfolk, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of A47.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Runham?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Asda, JET or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car away when asked.

If you are on your own driveway in Runham, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next exit means where to come off if you're on the M11, over 50 miles from Runham.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Runham is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Norwich — so say about how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians arrive in Runham

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Northgate Primary School, near Runham Vauxhall Village Sign or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the replies decide the work and our price.

No one heads out until you've had our quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

The motor is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run need about half an hour after we arrive.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of Three Ways Meeting Point, on a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Runham motorists

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Norfolk, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
