# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Runsell Green: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where your car sits around Runsell Green, is normally all it takes if found before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that's what many newer diesels around Runsell Green and Horne Row run, with diesel feeding your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Runsell Green

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Mill Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Anchor on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Gay Bowers or the middle of Runsell Green: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Runsell Green forecourt or a driveway over in Woodham Mortimer, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many motors mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — from Beaulieu Park's car park, say — not when the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across Essex, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not rushed by Pedlars Path at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Runsell Green: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start the engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts your pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump.

If you are on your own drive in Runsell Green, leave the car where it is.

Where the engine has run already, pull over safely then turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M25 — under 25 miles out of Runsell Green — at the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Chelmsford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Runsell Green.

## When our technicians arrive around Runsell Green, what occurs?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St John Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School Danbury, near Catholic Church of the English Martyrs or on your own drive.

Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

During the phone call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
