# Rushenden: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Rushenden.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Rushenden and Mile Town run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Rushenden: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Rushenden Road before work, or in the car park at The Trafalgar on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

It's seconds, whether in Queenborough or bang in the heart of Rushenden.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Iwade or a forecourt around Rushenden, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Queenborough, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Kent that is.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of River View.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Rushenden?

Don't start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Shell or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive around Rushenden, leave the car where it sits.

When the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe then turn it off.

Come off the M2 — under 10 miles out of Rushenden — at the next junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Rushenden makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Southend-on-Sea — so tell us about how far it went.

## Rushenden: what happens when our engineers turn up

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Queenborough School and Nursery, close to Rushenden Community Hall or on your own driveway.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those answers set both work and quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Before we leave, we fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of Queenborough Castle, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

## Rushenden motorists: the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere in Kent.
