# Rushington: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens until the motor pulls it round.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully flushed where the car stands around Rushington.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rushington

Things to do:

- Remove your keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so don't throw it out.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SO40 9, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: your engine remains off.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is pointless.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Bartley Avenue.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

On a forecourt around Rushington, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Eling last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it remains there.

A car left standing in Rushington with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside the tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Ashurst Bridge or the middle of Rushington.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Wherever in Hampshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Rushington

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Lydlynch Infant School the refill is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Spicers Way.

Else, in dim light outside The New Inn, your car gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in Hampshire, Rushington included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Rushington?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Spicer's Hill Coppice or halfway across Rushington.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Rushington lies under 3 miles from the Nursling Spur Motorway; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading towards Southampton, under 5 miles away, gives a much bigger job than crossing Rushington to the car park by Hounsdown Community Hall.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has stopped.

When it's noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Rushington: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Rushington: a side street close to Totton Evangelical Free Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies decide the work, so first our technicians ask what was put in, about what quantity, plus if your motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when that tank is emptied, right there.

A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not wash out by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Rushington or in a bay at Totton.

Our engineers check it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

Rushington sits close to the city of Southampton, approximately 4.1 miles away, and is near other nearby places such as Hounsdown, Brokenford, and Totton. ## AdBlue drains across Rushington and Hampshire

Over the SO postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs around Rushington serve most of Hampshire as well, Hounsdown, Brokenford and Totton included.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our technicians empty it there, with no need to take it to us; that suits Rushington, a residential suburb, well.

## Rushington: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Totton Christian Centre.

That's why every call from Rushington starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Once those are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Rushington: still beside your car?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Rushington or anywhere in Hampshire.
