# Salisbury: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine has not run, it is drained and fully rinsed where the vehicle sits in Salisbury.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains how it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven around Salisbury and The Close carry another liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Salisbury: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a drive off Castle Street before work, or in the car park outside The Salisbury Arms heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Salisbury or out in St Pauls.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, at a forecourt around Salisbury or a drive out in Churchfields. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at the nearest station? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Wiltshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Market Place.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Salisbury: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Keep your ignition off as well, since on many diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Shell, Esso or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear if asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Salisbury.

When the engine has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

On the M27, under 15 miles from Salisbury, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Southampton, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Salisbury.

## Our arrival around Salisbury, and what happens next

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Osmund's Catholic Primary School, Salisbury, close to Young Gallery or on your own drive.

What fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those answers decide both work and quote.

No one sets off until you have had the quote by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

Before we go, our technicians start the engine and confirm that it is running correctly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## About Salisbury

Salisbury is a city situated in a picturesque riverside location in Wiltshire, England. It is notable for its cathedral and is found where several rivers meet. The city's position allows for easy access to nearby cities, including Southampton and Bath. Salisbury is a significant urban centre in the region.

## AdBlue drains around Salisbury and across Wiltshire

Salisbury is a cathedral city, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, The Friary and Wyndham Park among them, across the SP postcode area.

Fastest of all: give a SP1 1 postcode for the van.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Draining takes place right there, be it a drive, a street near Salisbury Library, or a lay-by on the way to The Greencroft.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Bradbeers? By a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

## In short, for Salisbury drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Wiltshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
