# Salt Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Salt Hill, catching it before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels around Salt Hill and Myrke run, with diesel for your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of cars have a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Salt Hill: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Bath Road before work, or in the car park outside The Moon and Spoon on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Salt Hill or out in Chalvey.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Salt Hill forecourt or a driveway out in Cippenham, take a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Slough? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across Berkshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and not rushed beside Windmill Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both behind a single flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using its own spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Salt Hill?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, JET or any other — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask.

Your own drive in Salt Hill is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

## Salt Hill: what happens when our technicians turn up

By Montem Academy, near Montem Mound or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody sets off before you've heard our quote over the phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before leaving.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
