# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Saltwood? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where your car stands in Saltwood.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Saltwood: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Pocket your keys, which prevents someone switching the electrics on.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting CT21 4, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Never do these:

- Moving the car even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down The Green.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Ask the attendants to help you move the car off the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Saltwood, whether it's the Esso or elsewhere.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it stands.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

From a separate reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the same place the intake draws from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Pedlinge last night and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning around Saltwood makes it worse. In your tank only, waiting does nothing.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and the problem is diluted fuel.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside your tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, and so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Pennypot or the heart of Saltwood alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside the tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, wherever the car has come to rest across Kent.

## Saltwood: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Saltwood CofE Primary School.

Near Grange Road, a driver pours a bottle in at home after work.

Otherwise, after dark by The Castle Hotel, your car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same mistake, same first response — leave it off — wherever you are in Saltwood or the remainder of Kent.

## Saltwood: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Maybe returning from The Ameican Garden, or midway across Saltwood, your motor may run rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or stall.

No starting it again to check: stop when safe, then switch everything off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M20, under a mile from Saltwood, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for Canterbury, under 15 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Saltwood to the car park by Village Hall.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's noticed early.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Saltwood: what it takes

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Saltwood: a side street near St Peter & St Paul Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What was put in, about the quantity, plus whether your engine has turned over: we check before all else, because those shape the job.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than for petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the last step.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Sandling or on a driveway around Saltwood.

Before we leave, our engineers confirm it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## AdBlue drains around Saltwood and across Kent

AdBlue jobs around Saltwood go to teams that cover the places around it — Hythe, Orchard Valley as well as Sandling — and most of Kent beyond, throughout CT postcodes.

Near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.

Wherever your car sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our engineers drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Saltwood, a coastal village, well.

## Saltwood: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so no single price would be honest.

Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Saltwood Castle.

With that reason, every enquiry from Saltwood begins by asking the identical trio — what was put in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of a figure.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## In Saltwood and still beside your car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Saltwood or anywhere in Kent.
