# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sandbraes

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor hasn't run, it's drained and fully flushed where the car sits around Sandbraes.

Reading before the event? Then what follows covers why it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your engine — but plenty of newer diesels seen about Sandbraes and Clixby carry another liquid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Sandbraes

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hansard Crescent before work, or in the car park outside The Settlement on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's seconds, whether out in Caistor or right in the heart of Sandbraes.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Nettleton Top or a forecourt in Sandbraes, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles show what goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Barnetby? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are around Lincolnshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Keyworth Drive.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Sandbraes: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Nettleton Service Station or any other — the attendants will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Sandbraes, leave the vehicle where it sits.

When your motor has been run by now, stop safely and switch the car off.

Come off the M180 — under 10 miles out of Sandbraes — at the first exit.

A short hop across Sandbraes is a smaller job than a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Sandbraes: what occurs when our engineers get there

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Caistor CofE and Methodist Primary School, near Caistor Grammar School Library or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those answers decide this work and our quote.

That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it clears away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Then our technicians start it and check it runs correctly before leaving.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains around Sandbraes, and Lincolnshire beyond

Over LN postcodes, our vans covering Sandbraes — a small village — work the nearby locations too, Cabourne and Nettleton included.

A postcode starting LN7 6 gets our van to you fastest.

No need to move the car.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Canada Wood, a side street near St Peter & St Paul's Church: our technicians drain the vehicle where it sits.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Caistor Methodist Church? Close to a border? Asking beats guessing, so ring.

## In short, for Sandbraes people

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Lincolnshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103.
